Common Replacement Window Terms for Huntsville Homeowners

Home Windows

Home windows are designed generally for residential buildings.

Window Sash

The window sash allows the window pane to stay in place inside the window frame. The window sashes can found in double-hung and single-hung windows.

Window Frame

Window frames hold the glass in place in a window.

Window Pane

The window pane is a sheet of glass that is placed in the window. Window panes come in multiple options including double pane, triple pane and energy-efficient coating such as Low-E.

Low-E

Low-E is a coating on the glass of a window that reflects infrared radiation. This allows heat to stay in your home during the cold seasons and keep the heat out during the hot seasons.

Argon Gas

Argon gas is safe, non-toxic and stationary. The gas is placed in between the panes of the window.  This creates insulation that increases your window’s energy efficiency.

Bay Windows

Bay windows consist of a collection of three different windows.  There can be a variety of angles that bay windows are installed depending on how far the window extends from the home.

Bow Windows

Bow windows consist of a collection of six different windows which creates an arc design. These windows usually consist of hung windows or single hung windows.

Double-Hung Windows

Double-hung windows function by using a sash to allow the window to slide up and down. Both panes are operational.  The tilt-in feature allows for easy and safe cleaning.

Single-Hung Windows

Single-hung windows are different from double-hung windows. The pane of the single hung windows is stationary.

Awning Windows

Awning windows do not require window sash to operate.  The hinges are connected to the wall located at the top of the window.  A hand crank must is used to open the window outward.

Casement Windows

Casement windows use a hinge that is connected to the wall to allow the windows to open similar to a book. A hand crank is used to open and close the window.

Garden Windows

Garden windows jut out from a house’s exterior which allows the window to capture more sunlight.  The garden window’s concept is similar to that of a bay window.  Garden windows are on a smaller scale.  The garden window includes screen twin-sealing vents and a deep shelf as a base that make it perfect for plants.

Sliding Windows

Sliding windows use a rail system that allows the windows to open and close.  The rail system is made up of a fixed pane and a sliding pane.
